Gezaulole Cycle

Geography

Gezaulole is located 13 km south of Kigamboni ,across the ferry via road to Amani Protea Hotel and Kimbiji. It is a generally flat area, with low vegetation and vast amounts of coconut trees. It is a little cooler than Dar es salaam due to the abundant ocean breeze, making it good for cycling.

People

The people of Gezaulole village are native to the Pwani coastal region. They are the Zaramo. The Zaromo belong to the Bantu speaking people. Most of Zaromo are famers, mat makers and woodcarvers.Their main religion is Islam due to their location i.e coast ,this has led to Islam and other diverse backgrounds to be part of their rich culture. The Zaromo have managed to maintain their cultural habits even though there is urbanisation and they are located close to the city.

History

Gezaulole village is one of the few remaining Ujamaa village, which was established during the time of Ujamaa na Kujitegemea (Communalism and self reliance) policy under Mwalimu J.K Nyerere. Gezaulole was one example of how an Ujamaa village should be. Gezaulole village is also a place of the Zaramo tribe, an indigenous people of the coastal strip, Dar and Coast Region who still preserve and practise their very rich traditions and culture.

Sinda Island

Sinda Island is a 20min boat sail/ride from the campsite, it is a remote unspoiled Island, if you love the feel of being alone this is just the right island to go to. Blow holes, sea stacks and other geographical features are seen clearly - this might be an opportunity to revise your geography.

Site Style

The campsite is on a beautiful beach with clear blue water. Bandas are available for shade, fresh water tap, clean pit toilets and cubicles for washing with a bucket. Accommodation will be in three person tents, with one bigger 4-5 person tent.
