The Great Rift Trail
The Great Valley
From past volcanic activities faulting and folding about 30 million years ago the great Rift valley was formed stretching from Southern Tanzania to Southern Kenya dotted with lakes and mountains reaching the height of 5900 metres above sea level. It stretches from the Eastern Arc Mountain Range to the low flat plains of the Serengeti, to the salt lakes of Manyara, to Ngorongoro. From Lush Green Vegitation to grasslands, it has the contrasts of many African environments in one region.
The Great Rift Trail
The Great Rift Trail is a 10 day expedition starting from Dar es Salaam through the Great Rift Valley. It combines biking, hiking and driving and thus does not require much physical stamina (the trip is vehicle supported). The stunning beauty of biking, hiking and camping on this expedition is a feeling that grips your soul and is never forgotten.
Bagamoyo
Bwaga Moyo (Lay down your heart) is the dorment slave town where ruins of old buildings show evidence of its past. Bagamoyo in the 19th century was the biggest trading centre of Africa the main exit point of slaves and ivory from mainland Tanzania, Congo, Burundi, Rwanda and Zambia by Arabs. Today Bagamoyo is one of Tanzania's historicaly rich sites with structures dating back to the 12th century.
Pangani
Pangani is a town on the coast south of Tanga. It is an old German Colonial town, situated beside a delta (Pangani river) with beautiful beaches. Activities include excellent water sport, swimming with dolphins on Maziwi Island, Snorkelling, Hiking in the forest and a sunset cruise along the river.
Amani Nature Reserve
One of Tanzania's Lush Rain Forests in the Usambara mountains, Amani Nature reserve is good for hiking and mountain biking. It is surrounded by tea plantations.
Kilimanjaro Foot Hills
The highest peak in Africa, Kilimanjaro's foothills are always over-looked for their potential as everyone is concentrating on the climbing. Rain forest, coffee, tea plantations and villages cover the foot hills. This is a truely unforgattable biking environment and a chance to visit a Chagga village and learn about Chagga culture.
Mt Meru
Home of the Maasai, Mt Meru is the second highest mountain in Tanzania. Short grass covers the foot hills of Meru, farming is not exceptional and Maasai cattle graze in harmony with Zebra herds. Here you will have a chance to camp in a Maasai Boma, hike and bike with giraffes, and zebra at close view.
Ngorongoro
The Ngorongoro crater - the African Eden, eighth wonder of the world. In the Ngorongoro Conservation Area animal and mankind coexist in a natural setting. The first view of Ngorongoro is a collapsed volcano 250 sq km wide and 600 metres deep. Makat the soda lake is a great attraction for flamingos and other water birds, not to mention other fresh water lakes that support 20,000 wildlife in the crater. The Maasai who moved into the area about 200 years ago are the most numerous and recent inhabitants, their culture and strong tradition interests many visitors. Ngorongoro is the only national park in Tanzania that allows human inhabitants.
Serengeti
All has been said about the Serengeti, I can't say much but stunning game viewing and environment make camping in the Serengeti splendid. (Safaris for Ngorongoro and Serengeti will be taken over by Sycamore Travel and Great Maasai)
